In his novel, “The Lucky One”, author Nicholas Sparks sticks to the cookie-cutter plot line that he’s become notorious for; a young southern couple destined to be together and the forces driving them apart. Specifically in this novel, we are introduced to Logan Thibault, a marine who finds a picture of a woman during his tour in Iraq, and is convinced that she is his lucky charm. After completing his service, Logan walks from Colorado to North Carolina in order to find the woman and thank her. When Logan and Beth finally meet, their love story unfolds but not without lies, betrayal, and a villainous ex-husband.
As someone whose read several Sparks novels in the past year, my main issue with this book was its predictability and similarity to other works by Sparks. Although the story was touching and emotional, I couldn’t help but feel like I had already heard it a thousand times before. GoodReads reviewer Anna commented, “The plot was too predictable and the characters were too generic.” Logan and Beth are certainly loveable protagonists, but the lack of originality in these characters, the setting, and the plot take away from the otherwise entertaining story.
Despite the predictability and painfully slow beginning, I gave this book two stars because I became roped into the couple’s love story, just as Sparks intended. I felt obligated to find out what would happen to Logan and Beth, and Sparks definitely deserves credit for being able to hold his reader’s attention.
The climax of the story hits just as a massive storm does (as is also found in Sparks’ other novels, “The Notebook,” “Message in a Bottle” and “Nights in Rodanthe”) and the reader is left wondering whom Sparks will decide to kill off this time. In my opinion, the ending was very lackluster and seemed like Sparks took the easy way out in finishing his story, but again, this didn’t surprise me.
If you are a woman who enjoys an easy-read romance novel and doesn’t mind cheesiness or a lack of imagination, then this is the book for you. If not, I recommend avoiding this book, or the Sparks genre all together.

The Lucky One

​The Lucky One is another stereotypical romance novel by Nickolas Sparks. It starts when Logan Thibault, a U.S. Marine, finds a picture of a woman lying in the dirt during his tour in Iraq. This photograph ends up saving Logan’s life when he goes over to pick it up and an explosions occurs where he was just standing. When Logan returns home he makes it his mission to find the woman in the picture and thank her. This journey takes him to North Carolina, where he asks all around town for this mystery girl. He eventually is lead to a dog kennel that the woman, Beth, owns, where Logan finds himself accepting a job. While working at the kennel, Logan and Beth spark an undeniable connection, and soon fall madly in love. The only complication is Beth’s ex-husband and father of her son Ben. If his demands are not met it could spell disaster for Beth and her son.
​I really enjoyed this book, and also the movie. My favorite part about both the book and the movie were the dynamic characters. The author, Nickolas Sparks, did a great job bringing these characters to life, and going into depth with their personalities. This made the characters easier to relate to and also made the plot more interesting. The interaction between these characters spelled for an interesting story. They were all very unique and each had their own riveting past, often filled with darker secrets than they would like to admit. When these secrets were brought into the light, they caused chaos between many of the characters. Beth and Logan’s love, despite all of the obstacles it had to overcome, was able to triumph in the end. This story overall was very heartwarming and a great inspiration for true love.
