This is a masterpiece. Now the winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

This is the best novel I read in 2013, and certainly one of the best I've read in the past decade. As you probably are aware, it was recently awarded the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
It's rare that a novel containing such horror, tragedy and sadness could be considered so engaging, but Johnson has managed to pull it off. We follow the life of an orphan in North Korea who has survived a harsh upbringing full of dangerous work assignments, starvation and abuse and now, as a young man, is put to work by the state doing various nefarious tasks. We see right away that he and the majority of his countrymen have little actual choice when it comes to participation in such acts. This man, who has never known parents, never known love and has only known faint glimmers of hope endures a journey that takes him from the lowest of lows to the only highs that he's ever experienced in his short life. Along the way, the reader gets a glimpse of North Korea from the suffering masses in the gulags to the privileged in Pyongyang. The result is a work of fiction from which it is difficult to turn away and which will definitely leave a lasting impression.
Johnson does an incredible job of showing the humanity in the North Korean society amid the seemingly hopeless situation in which they are trapped. It becomes an exercise in thought about self determination, free will, freedom, opression and redemption. I cannot recommend this novel highly enough. In fact,if I could only recommend one book this year, it would be The Orphan Master's Son.

Stunning Storytelling

I normally don't like/finish books with themes related to cruelty, nor do I normally listen to audio books (this was my first), and I admit I was tempted to abandon it after a few sections, but it grew on me more and more as I listened. It is such a bizarre mix of cruelty, despair, and struggle mixed with comedy that it is almost Shakespearean. This is one of those books that makes one realize how different societies can be, and how easily people can be oppressed to the point of hopelessness. It was a fascinating read, not for the timid, but the author really knows how to develop a story, and the characters were fascinating. I have been reading prize-winning books that span the years from 2000 to present, and this one, unlike a number of others, really did deserve the Pulitzer in my view. It is a very unusual novel, well worth reading.
